It’s always a scary situation; your car starts to shake or make an odd noise and you instantly know something is terribly wrong. The most important thing you should do is remain calm. - Get off the road: If you’re able to make it to the shoulder, calmly signal and make your way over. Try to park as far away from traffic as you can while staying on level ground. If you are unable to make it to one of the shoulders, turn your hazard lights on IMMEDIATELY so other drivers are aware of the situation and, most importantly, so they can SEE you.
- Identify Your Location: Look for road signs or major landmarks; gas stations, restaurants or commercial buildings to determine your location. This will be very helpful when you call for assistance.
- Wait Safely: Depending on where you’re vehicle is parked; it may be safer to stay in the car while in other situations, it’s best to get out of the vehicle. If you exit the vehicle, make sure to get out on the opposite side of traffic. Then, DO NOT at any point stand in front or behind your vehicle. Some drivers may not see your stalled car and you want to provide a good distance between you and them.
- Call For Assistance: Whether it’s your reliable towing company, your spouse or your parents, make them aware of the situation and your location. Depending on the severity of your situation, (i.e. heavy traffic, inclement weather or limited visibility) you may want to notify the police. They can dispatch officers to come and place warning signs around your car and alert other drivers of a stalled vehicle.
